Lawton and Kiti Lawton.

R.T. wrote the following in a follow-up email after the Oct 08 Reunion: ..."Kiti and I enjoyed talking with everyone, and truth be known, I probably conversed with more Campus High people last weekend than I did in 1960-61. Seems like work and other organizations got in the way back then...It was amazing to find out how far some of our Campus people had gone, the events they had been involved in, the pieces of history they'd made, and all this from what was essentially a rural high school at the time. On the other hand I had trouble finding physical reference points. The cafeteria was demolished to build a bigger, better one, all the campus style buildings are now joined by one long, connecting walkway, the locker bays at one end of each building are gone, the auditorium/theater is being remodeled, the football stadium is no longer on campus, and I couldn't find a single classroom I could swear I learned in... In the end, my reference points became the people I went to Campus High with and all the stories they had to tell. And, in the end, the people in your life are what's important in life. I wished I could have spent more time conversing with some of them. Perhaps we'll continue at the 50th Reunion.

Scott Kiehl and Larry Staats, past Co-Captains of the CHS Wresting team. Better get another car besides a Dodge, Gayle!

*** blogger's note: In Mr. Killian's morning Sociology class the 'hot' April Current Events topic was:

12 April 1961 - Vostok 1. The purpose of cutting away the engine is to enable the student to see all working parts. Some of the features of the engine are cut away block, cylinders, pistons, carburetor, manifolding and many other parts. The engine will be used by the drivers education classes to allow these students to see what make the automobile tick.

Mar 22, 1961
'Bomb' Explodes in Class

Blowing up things seems to be the going rate in auto mechanics at Campus High School. During the year there have been about four of these mysterious explosions. These bombs are actually caused by the ignition coil which has a tendency to explode when it becomes too hot.
The most recent of these explosion happened Thursday when a group of students were trying to start a 51 Mercury engine. It seems as if Jim Holmes, Lynn Shelton and Duane Quirico were trying to start the engine with a 12 volt battery using a 6 volt coil with out a register. The engine had run about ten minutes when suddenly there was a loud explosion.
Looking around to see what had happened, everyone saw Duane and Jim who had been splattered with hot stinking tarish-like oil. Jim had it all over his shirt and Duane had been splattered around the neck and face. Luckily he was not injured.
___Elvin Leedy, Typing I

Special April Fools Colt Edition 1962

Selected Articles from a four page suppliment of the Colt Special, Official newspaper for Campus High School.

Did You Know?

By Linda Haymond

Did you know that Mr. Young's wife picks out all of his secretaries for him? This permitted only enough time for one training flight, after which flies knew the way home, but were dead.

Barbara Barbie Y spent her grade school years waiting for us to catch up to her in height. We all wanted on Barbara's side, but they wouldn't let us run across the half court line...stupid 60's girls' rules. Barb was hired by Mattel Corp. to be the model for the first Barbie doll. Her portrayal of a girl that was torn between her love for a mortal and her fascination of Death was excellent.
Norman Godfrey did well in his role of Diego, the boy who hopelessly in love with Celeste, who was ultimately claimed by Death.
Ronald Hood not only looked the part of Baron de Cesarea, a white mustached and white bearded old man who generally managed to find the humorous side of life, but did as find a job portraying him.
In the more serious roles, Bob Bird, as the distraught Duke Lambert, and Connie Smilth, as a regal princess with a deep love and concern for Celeste were outstanding performers.
Minor Characters Outstanding
Minor characters that presented excellent portrayals were Willene Runnsick, as the beautiful Alda; Pat Smith, as Rhoda Fenton, the typical English girl, both Alda and Rhoda being attracted by the mysterious Prince Sirki: Gary Girard, as Eric Fenton, Rhoda's brother and deeply in love with Alda; Charalotte Moore, as Duchess Stephanie, Duke Lambert's wife; Melvin Martin, who well represented the fearless Major Whitread; Fred Bursack and Susan Fye, As Fidele and Cora, servants in the house of Duke Lambert, who acting was the first bit of drama to set the mood for the play.

Play Cast, Crew Frolic
The cast and production crew of "Death Takes a Holiday" and their dates ended up the last show on Friday 3, at Jon Kiles house. The schoolhouse was located first at the corner of Broadway and MacArthur Road. Church was held in the building and according to the old timers, a number of men jacked up the structure on Sunday after church in 1880 or 81 and moved it to the prsent location at 3612 South Seneca.

That building served the district until the 1918-19 school year when a two-room modern brick schoolhouse was built. Enrollment had risen to 62 pupils by 1924 and the need for more room brought about construction of two more rooms by 1926.

Addition of three more classrooms and an auditorium in 1949-50 helped relieve crowding. A five-room addition was constructed in 1952 and more classrooms were added in 1954 and 1956.

The last major addition to the building was completed in 1958. Enrollment increased rapidly the next year or two, and it was necessary to locate three classrooms of fifth grade across the street in the National Guard Armory until completion of a new school, South Enterprise located at 2101 West 45th St. South. After the annexation to the Wichita School system in 1963-64 South Enterprise was renamed Clyde V. Cessna.

Upon completion of new school projects than began in 2000 after approval of a $284.5 million bond issue the original red brick Enterprise School house was demolished despite efforts by the community to save the historic school building.

Information compiled from Internet Elementary School Web pages of Haysville and Wichita KS.

GRADE SCHOOLS THAT MADE UP CAMPUS HIGH SCHOOL

Campus High School opened in the fall of 1960. It was formed to serve the elementary schools of Haysville, Oatville, South Riverside and Enterprise.

HISTORY OF HAYSVILLE SCHOOL (from HaysvilleOnline.com)

School dist. number 57, Haysville's first school was built in 1876 at a location that may have been near what are now the Water Department facilities. This building was moved to 79th and Seneca where it was eventually replaced by the red brick building in 1919. In 1946 district 57 was consolidated with district 187 to form district 261.
Haysville's entire historic district was destroyed in the 1999 tornado. Destruction of the historic buildings began at the red brick schoolhouse at 79th and Seneca and continued north along Main taking out the elevator, bank, churches and more. The only thing left standing on the east side of Main was the original bank vault.

HISTORY OF OATVILLE SCHOOL

The first Oatville School was a two-room school located at the northwest corner of MacArthur Rd. and West Street in southwest Wichita, near the small community of Oatville. In 1956, the present Oatville Elementary was opened on South Hoover and the principal lived on the campus in a small white house, located directly north of the building.
Oatville then had classes for Kindergarten through eight grade. School buses have since provided transportation for children to the rural elementary school. In 1967, Oatville was unified with the Haysville School District and the seventh and eighth graders were transferred to Haysville Junior High.

HISTORY OF SOUTH RIVERSIDE SCHOOL

William Allen White Elementary School was previously named South Riverside Jr. High School and later was South Riverside Intermediate School. From 1960 to 1964 Riverside School was a feeder school for Campus High School. Due to annexation of almost all of the school district by the Wichita City Commission, the South Riverside Elementary School Dist. became part of the Wichita Public School System in 1964.

Campus HS Building Layout

Aerial photo from the 1962 Campus Yearbook

History of Campus (From USD 261 Web Site)

Campus High School opened in the fall of 1960. Its official name at that time was Rural High School district 191. It was formed to serve the elementary schools of Haysville, Oatville, South Riverside and Enterprise. The name "Campus" was chosen by the students who were to attend the new high school. Prior to the opening of Campus, students from these elementaries could choose between Derby, Clearwater or Wichita for high school attendance.

When rural H.S. 191 was formed in 1958, a bond issue of $4 million was passed to build two high schools. The present Campus High School was to be called North Campus High School and a second South Campus High School was to be built in Haysville at the corner of Meridian and 71st street. By the time Campus was completed in 1960, costs had run to $2.75 million with only $1.25 million left for the south high school. Construction on this South Campus High School began immediately, but only five buildings were completed. Campus High School opened in the fall of 1960 with an enrollment of approximately 1200 students.

Several things made Campus unique at the time of its construction. The obvious thing is its architecture. The story is that several school board members visited schools in the southwestern United States when looking at design plans, thus the unique layout of the facility. The facility was also unique at that time in that it had a pool, was air-conditioned and all-electric. Early drawings of the facility included an airplane runway along the northern boundary of the campus so the school could teach aviation. The south campus actually did have a runway, which was occasionally used until the late 60's. All of this combined to bring about much resentment in the community of Haysville. Rumors persisted for years that the facility had heated sidewalks. The builder had placed tunnels under the sidewalks to carry air to the buildings. This made and still does make the sidewalks heat up and melt snow, thus the reason for the rumors.

Public sentiment became even more negative when the Wichita district annexed part of Rural High School 191 in 1961. This took almost half the student population of Campus High School. The south high school site would remain empty from 1961-66. In the fall of 1967, Freeman elementary opened on that site.

Campus had 4 additions to the original facility in the past 40 years. the library has been expanded, locker rooms were added to the gym, classrooms were added to the west side of "G" building a new science building and gym addition were completed in 1999. (Much of this information was taken from a short history of the Haysville School, put together by Mr. Wayne Holt)

htt://www.usd261.com/campus/history.htm

New Cafeteria to Open Soon

Campus Cafeteria May Be Opened Soon.
