Death Takes a Holiday Class Play

Colt Special February 10, 1961
By Charyl Markin
Death took a holiday before an audience of approx. 700 people on the nights of February 2 and 3 at 8:15 p.m., as 13 students under the direction of Mr. Seth McClintock presented the first all school play.
Major Characters Excellent
Jim Johnson was superb as Prince Sirki, alias Death, the being who had never known human emotions and assumed the form of a mortal to explore their worlds of love, fear, grief and tribulation.
Sara Reidel gave a brilliant performance in the role of Celeste. Her portrayal of a girl that was torn between her love for a mortal and her fascination of Death was excellent.
Norman Godfrey did well in his role of Diego, the boy who hopelessly in love with Celeste, who was ultimately claimed by Death.
Ronald Hood not only looked the part of Baron de Cesarea, a white mustached and white bearded old man who generally managed to find the humorous side of life, but did as find a job portraying him.
In the more serious roles, Bob Bird, as the distraught Duke Lambert, and Connie Smilth, as a regal princess with a deep love and concern for Celeste were outstanding performers.
Minor Characters Outstanding
Minor characters that presented excellent portrayals were Willene Runnsick, as the beautiful Alda; Pat Smith, as Rhoda Fenton, the typical English girl, both Alda and Rhoda being attracted by the mysterious Prince Sirki: Gary Girard, as Eric Fenton, Rhoda's brother and deeply in love with Alda; Charalotte Moore, as Duchess Stephanie, Duke Lambert's wife; Melvin Martin, who well represented the fearless Major Whitread; Fred Bursack and Susan Fye, As Fidele and Cora, servants in the house of Duke Lambert, who acting was the first bit of drama to set the mood for the play.

Play Cast, Crew Frolic
The cast and production crew of "Death Takes a Holiday" and their dates ended up the last show on Friday 3, at Jon Kiles house. Pop, chips and chip dip, and sandwiches were the guests' fare. Records, eating, dancing, and general conversation entertained the participants. For added interest ask Jon about his coach and all the weight.

Did You Know? by Linda Haymond
During the past three or four weeks at CHS many juicy tidbits of information or what might be called gossip has come into the journalism department.
Did you know that Michele Sealey and Sandy Kolb have added two or three more cubic inches to their locker simply by stuffing it with junk?
Did you know that Don Hurd and Bill Chase carry an owl's foot around for good luck. The owl's foot comes in quite handy for startling people out of their wits also.
I'm sorry ILTA club but did you know that Tom has a girl friend in Kansas City? Better luck next time.
Did you know that Suzy Wheeler likes Marty Briley" Oh you did.
Did you know that Wanda Flowers is an aunt? Just call her Aunt Pansy.
Did you know that Donna Jackson's nickname is "Caterpiller?" You had better be careful when you call her that though.
Did you know that Mr. Williams is angry with second hour American Government class?
Did you know that Gene Marshall's ambition is to go to a Youth Camp? Ask him about it. He'll tell how much he is looking forward to it.
Did you know that Norman Godfrey had Kay Langhofer's clothes over the week end?
Did you know that Ray Lansdowne fell on his head and four stitches were taken?
Best of all, did you know that February 14 is Valentines Day?

Campus Dedication

Campus High School was dedicated in a ceremony held Oct 15, 1961 in the school's auditorium. The news clipping was copied from the October 27, 1961 Colt Special Newspaper, Volume II, Number 4 on page two.

On a lighter note, art teacher Dee Connett's white 1960 MG was featured on page 3's article "Heap of the Week."
Click on the article to read more details.

In the "Did you Know?" column it was reported "Some seniors have promised to help John Sparke, government instructor, in his campaign for governor of Kansas next year. They plan to use "Big John" for his theme song. Big Bad John, can be found in the teachers workroom every morning listening to his theme song...
Was that a new flag flying on the football field flag pole or was that Issie Templeton's bright red pj's?
"Knights of the Library." Cross country boys playfully protested Mrs. Knights strict rules Thursday in the library by picketing. Didn't work, boys!
